On January 11th, 1830 Lagrange college opened with enrollment of 70 male students and became the first state-chartered College in Alabama. Located on a spur of the Cumberland mountain off Hwy 157 in the East Colbert County at 1491 LaGrange College Rd, Leighton, Alabama the site was listed on the Alabama register of landmarks and heritage in 1976. Since 1998 the LaGrange Living Historical Association has maintained the site.
